Quake vrs Unreal, fifa vrs PES, Spy vrs Spy. For decades gamers have enjoyed arguing over games that are so similar yet very different to those who play and love them. Which is better? Unreal, Fifa and Spy of course!
But these days the debate has turned to the modern warfare shooters Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare are fighting the battle for gamers hearts and mind and both do excellent jobs at offering different yet similar experiences. Here myself and resident PC hipster Cheez will finally decide through intense debate which game is the greatest (hint: it’s MW3!)
Discuss..
Hint: it’s MW3?
To compare the two on this merit alone is fairly redundant as the the singleplayer campaign for both is fairly redudent as they’re both mindless rail-shooters Hint: it’s MW3?

Visually they both feel like something Michael Bay vomitted up, after eating too many ‘e’ numbers; games designed for kids with attentions disorders.. There’s no pacing or subtlety to either of these titles’ single player – it’s precisely what you imagine it will be. That’s the COD brand.
Multiplayer is where the important differences are. First off – the ‘cod’ series has, in recent times, been the least ambitious series to date. The game engine(s) haven’t changed in the cod series for knocking on 4 years.
COD’s single player mechanics haven’t changed much in that time; in fact I would say they have dumbed it down some what. It really is a case of ‘follow NPC to location A, then B will happen. Shoot any number of respawning bad guys, and edge closer to a trigger point, to set off the next cut scene.’
How dull.

The multiplayer for COD is deathmatch. Granted, deathmatch done well (when it works). Yet, despite the game mode called ‘team’ death match, it’s a game less conducive to team play than Max Payne!
CoD multiplayer suits egotisical screaming brats who want to ‘prestiege’ within 24 hours of the game’s release, before ‘pwning noobs’ with horrendous game-unbalancing kill streak rewards.
Battlefield 3 has the bonus of offering 16 player, small-map Team Deathmatch in a CoD ‘style’ along side its major selling point. Large, 64 maps and a strong onus on team play.
Battlefield puts you in a sqauad by default, and offers rewards for team play – including spotting for your squad, defending your squard, capturing bases (in Conquest) or attacking the objective (in Rush).
The Frostbite engine is a staggering feat, too. It really is something to behold, on the PC. It makes Call Of Duty look so ‘last-gen’.
Operation Wolf was a rail shooter, these are not. Also there is no ‘last-gen’ in PC gaming, this is not a console.
I have some guilty secrets..I like fast food, action movies, popular music and Call of Duty’s campaigns. Is it wrong that once a year I dedicate four to eight hours of my life to blast through some of the most explosive action scenes known to man. Is it wrong that in 365 days I enjoy the mindless slaughter of hundreds of enemy combatents for less time than I spend waiting for buses. Why should I be ashamed of playing a game I enjoy. They are deride by elitist like you who wish these games strived to be more but if you eat steak every night you soon get bored of steak. These games are packed with e-numbers but that is what makes it taste so good and addictive.
Now I enjoy a wander through the countryside as much as the next man but it is not something I enjoy as much when I am meant to be man shooting it up. A five minute trek to get sniped in the head is not my idea of fun. What I do enjoy is fast paced shooter action, I enjoy throwing knives and single game rivalries. COD is perfectly honed, competitive multiplayer fun. Battlefield 3 could be great, it has squads that rarely stick together. It has rewards for team play but nobody plays as a team. If you had enough friends to get a decent squad put together then maybe it would be better but most likely they would be having fun playing COD.
So while you may mock us and call ‘screaming brats’ and ‘kids with attention disorders’ remember that what you are really mean is that COD is too fast, too reliant on reflexes which you no longer have. Enjoy your walks in the countryside grandpa.
- It’s a rail shooter in the modern day gaming context. Operation Wolf was a game from the 80?s. The COD series doesn’t allow you to deviate from the path set out in the game. Not only does it not allow you to deviate, it also doesn’t allow you to progress at the speed you want to – you have to wait for dumb scripted actions for the ‘story’ to progress.
- It’s not wrong to like terrible things. You just like terrible things, that’s all.
- If you get sniped in the head while playing Battlefield, that’s your problem really? You need to play with a different approach, learn the maps, learn where those sniping lay and knife them in the back. From experience, I can assure you collecting dogtags is satisfying. Remember, sniping isn’t camping.
- COD is full of screaming brats, this is fact.
This grampa is rocking back and forth on his porch staring down the sights of his sniper rifle, just waiting for a noob like you to wander between the cross hairs. I’ll take those dogtags, thank you.
Whilst MW3 had won in terms of sales, I do agree that it has been dumbed down a little. It’s just about following now and admiring the view because the game has become a multiplayer focused title now.
Considering BF3 campaign is so damn short, I’m not sure how it couldnt fit on the disc and needed texture install packs when whatever DiCE did for BC2, they should have just used that for BF3.
